Chapter

Sixteen

Left alone with my post orgasmic bliss and thoughts of how to provoke Nash further—because there is no way that is a one time thing—I reluctantly dress in the scraps of lace followed by a blouse and skirts befitting a true maiden. Although right now I feel like a harlot from the Red Inn.

The door flies open and bangs off the wall as Gwyneth stalks into the room. Her gaze narrows on me, and I panic she can somehow tell Nash turned my world upside down. Maybe that’s why they are always so shiny? They are riding the orgasm haze dipped in ground unicorn dick?

“Where have you been?” she snaps as an unfamiliar male steps into the room behind her and shuts the door.

I open my mouth, but she slices her hand through the air as she paces back and forth in the room, her skirts swishing around her ankles. “I’ve been so worried. First, you disappear with the Stirlings from the library. Then, you don’t return home at sundown. I had to recruit Rob to take me to their chambers.” She swings her thumb over her shoulder at the slim male whose eyes don’t leave Gwyneth. Ugh, not another male after her floof. I need a floof repellent spray. “I searched for you, but both you and them were missing. Late meal came, and you missed sausages and I grew certain you were in trouble. What happened, Daphne?”

She pauses in front of me and blinks. I lean around her and stare at Rob. “I can’t tell you in front of him.”

His arms cross over his chest, and the tension in his body is palpable. Oh no, I’m not having some male laying claim to my Gwyneth after one diurnal. I arch a brow and fold my own arms.

“Leave, Rob,” she says, turning and ushering him from the room.

“For the record,” he says. “Don’t trust a word that comes out of her mouth if she’s been hanging around with the Stirlings.”

Gwyneth flashes a gentle, comforting smile at him. “Thank you for your help, Rob.”

“I’ll see you in the library later?” For a liaison in the stacks amongst the musty books? I don’t think so, Rob. Go rub your crotch against a tatty atlas. That’s the closest you’ll get to going on a trip around the realm.

“Maybe.” She clicks the door closed and spins on her heel to talk to me. “Spill the beans.”

I suck in a breath and lean against the mattress. “We went on a secret mission to King Arthur’s kingdom, where I was smuggled into the castle so I could steal a dagger for the Stirlings.”

Gwyneth's labored breathing fills the room, making me fear she is having a heart attack. Do you give mouth to mouth for that? Or chest compressions? Where was I the day they taught us about emergency matters?

“You stole something from King Arthur?”

“Yeah, a dagger with a ruby and a dragon on the handle.”

She scrunches up her face, squeezing her eyes shut and pinching her nose.
